Parent Competency #5-Education and Learning  

The fifth in our series on parenting competency has to do with education and learning.  Parents who model learning and support education for their children provide a great foundation for their children.

It is important for parents to model and value learning, support their children’s educational activities, and provide educational and learning opportunities for their children. 

For instance, parents can demonstrate the importance and value of reading by reading to their children when they are young.  This continues when they demonstrate their own interest in gaining new knowledge through reading and they express interest in what their children are reading.

Interest is a good thing to keep in mind.  When parents express interest in what their children are learning and the ideas they come up with, it helps children be more excited about the whole learning enterprise.

Interest and excitement about children’s learning is probably more beneficial to them than drilling them and quizzing them.
